FAIRFAX, Va. - The George Mason Softball team (10-16, 1-2 A-10) returns to action after a day off on Thursday by welcoming the Saint Louis Billikens to town for an Easter weekend series. The course of games begins Friday with a doubleheader tentatively beginning at 4 p.m., followed by a single game Saturday afternoon (12 p.m.).
Last year's highlight against the Billikens was in the Atlantic 10 tournament with a 4-0 victory behind
Marina Vitalich's 20
th complete game of the season.
Madison Aker and
Brooke Sullivan chipped in hits along with RBIs from
Victoria Webster and
Katherine Marsh.
Junior
Jess Curbeira led the Patriots' productive offensive performance against Virginia with three hits and a walk. The outing put her batting average well ahead for the team lead and is now 12
th in the A-10 at .353. The Henrico, Va. native tied her career-high for hits in a game for the third time this season and fifth of her career.
The highest total bases hit of the night came from
Liz Seymour's two-run home run in the first inning. The roundtripper was Seymour's first of the season and seventh of her career – tying her for 10
th all-time on the program's career leader board. Seymour is second on the team in hits (28) and extra-base hits (7).
In the last four games, RS-freshman
Adriana Erickson and sophomore
Madison Aker have each tallied six hits to put their averages over .400 in that span. Erickson has been the power source in the lineup to the tune of an .867 slugging percentage with three extra base hits. Aker's hits have been singles, but nonetheless she's picked up two hits in three consecutive games, tying her career high on each occasion.
Aker also stole a base last night for her fifth of the season, setting a new single-season career high.
Alyssa Lawton added to her team-leading seven on the year and is now one shy of tying her 2017 total. The Patriots have now stolen multiple bases three times this season and have done so in two consecutive games. The three from last night tied game two of the Bethune-Cookman doubleheader (March 13) for the second most swiped bags in a game this season.
Wednesday night was a night of firsts for a handful of freshmen Patriots.
Kate Owsley made her first collegiate start,
Jessica Goodwin delivered her first career RBI and
Courteney Harper made her first start of the season in right field.
