HILTON HEAD, S.C. – The George Mason University men's tennis team swept its Wednesday doubleheader and is now 3-0 at the PTR Springfest after taking down Edinboro (Pa.) by the score of 5-2 in Hilton Head.
Mason won two of three doubles matches, then captured four of the six singles crowns to take the victory. The Patriots won their morning match vs. Belmont Abbey, 7-0.
"The guys played really well in both of their matches today," head coach Jimmy Davis said. "I saw a lot of improvement in the areas we are working on, and we are starting to play more confidently in big point scenarios. This will give us some momentum to carry into a tough match on Friday. It's never easy playing back to back matches, and the guys showed some mental toughness and strong fitness to help get them through it."
In doubles, Mason won at No. 2 on the strength of a strong effort from
Daniel Gutierrez and
Carter Bradford, who took an 8-4 victory. The duo has now won four of its past five dual doubles contests of the season.
At No. 3, senior
Giuliano Buzoianu and sophomore
Edward Ayers won 8-2 to clinch the doubles point for the Green & Gold.
In singles, sophomore
Jakob Nielsen won his second singles match in as many tries, claiming a victory at No. 3 with an impressive showing (6-1, 6-2).
Gutierrez played a competitive match vs. Daniel Fernandez at No. 2, but the Mason senior came out on top with set victories of 7-5 and 7-5. The win clinched the match for the Patriots.
Senior
Pally Ray won his third singles match of PTR Springfest, taking down Mateus Santos in straight sets. He swept the first, 6-0, then won 6-4 in the second.
Rounding out the victories for the Green & Gold, freshman
Carter Bradford claimed a straight sets win at No. 5. He took the first set, 6-1, then won 6-2 in the second. He improves to a solid 10-2 in dual singles play this season.
Mason wraps up the PTR Springfest with a Friday matinee vs. South Carolina State. First serve is scheduled for 12:15 p.m.
"We've got a full day of practice tomorrow to get ready for Friday," Davis added. "We're feeling very motivated to keep the momentum we've built these last few matches."
