FAIRFAX, Va. – In a week-long poll conducted by WTOP, George Mason's 2005-06 NCAA Final Four Team was voted the area's best men's college basketball team of all time.

The Patriots beat out Georgetown's 1983-84 national championship team featuring Patrick Ewing, as well as Maryland's 2001-02 NCAA title team. In the final of the four-round vote, Mason's squad defeated the Georgetown team, 83 percent to 17 percent.

The Green & Gold shocked the world in 2005-06. The Patriots were one of the final teams to earn an at-large berth into the Big Dance, before rattling off four improbable victories to reach the NCAA Final Four.

Mason defeated Tom Izzo's Michigan State Spartans and Roy Williams' North Carolina Tar Heels, before claiming victory over Wichita State in the Sweet 16 in Washington, D.C. Then, before a biased DMV crowd in the regional final, Mason pulled off arguably the biggest upset in Elite 8 history, knocking off Jim Calhoun's No. 1 seed UConn Huskies to reach the national semifinals.

CBSSports.com's Matt Norlander profiled the Patriots in his award-winning feature, "Mason Men." You can read that article here.

Dan Steinberg and Adam Kilgore of the Washington Post also put together a retrospective, which you can read and view here
