Daniel Brooks hit his first career home run, belting a three-run homer in the ninth inning as the George Mason baseball team defeated Florida International 12-8 on Monday afternoon at Infinity Insurance Park in Miami, Fla.
Mason (5-10) scored three runs in the top of the first to take a 3-0 lead. Sophomore
Logan Driscoll drove in a run with a single, while junior
Bailey Klein knocked in two runs with a two-out single in the inning.
FIU (9-8) scored single runs in the second, third and fourth inning against Mason starter
Brian Marconi to tie the score 3-3.
The Patriots went back in front in the top of the fifth when Klein drove in two more runs with a two-out single to right to make the score 5-3.
The Panthers tied the game in the home half of the inning when Jose Garcia hit a two-run home run and then FIU took a 6-5 lead with a run in the sixth.
Mason scored seven runs over the final three innings, including five in the top of the ninth to take a 12-7 advantage. Brooks drove in the first three runs of his collegiate career, while senior
Trevor Kelly plated a run with a RBI ground out in the ninth.
Marconi allowed five runs, four earned, on seven hits over 4.1 innings in the no-decision. Senior
Ryan Ricci allowed three runs over 4.2 innings to earn his first win of the season.
Klein went 2-for-5 with five RBI. Driscoll was 4-for-6 with a RBI and scored four runs. Kelly finished 4-for-6 with two RBI and two runs scored.
The Patriots are back on the diamond when they face Liberty at 3 p.m. on Wednesday in Lynchburg, Va.
