Johnny Gomez (Indialantic, Fla.) captured the EIVA Player of the Week awards. Wagner was selected as Offensive Player of the Week while Gomez as Defensive Player of the Week.
The Feb. 26 version of the award was Wagner's second of his career, while Gomez adds his fifth to his career resume. Monday marked the ninth time George Mason has swept the weekly EIVA Player of the Week awards since the conference started distributing two of them in 2012.
Wagner compiled his second 20-kill match of the season at No. 7 Penn State in the Patriots' second ever 3-0 road win over the Nittany Lions. The 6-6 opposite's weekend saw him log a 4.43 kills per set average and hit .295 (31-13-61) over seven sets played. Wagner also notched five service aces over his seven sets, including one in a key situation against Saint Francis (Pa.) that gave Mason a 26-25 lead in the fourth set.
Gomez picked up a season high 15 digs in the Patriots' 3-1 win over Saint Francis (Pa.), including seven in a first set where the Patriots hit .417 and held the Red Flash to a .000 attack percentage. The seven digs was the third time Gomez totaled that amount in a set this season, tying his own team-high. The Indialantic, Fla. native registered 20 digs total over seven sets (2.86 digs per set), and contributed toward holding No. 7 Penn State to a .067 attack percentage - the third consecutive match the Green and Gold held their opponent under .100.
Mason has begun conference play 4-0 and sit alone at the top of the EIVA standings. Next up is a trip to New England for back-to-back matches against Sacred Heart on Mar. 2-3.
