CHARLESTON, S.C. – The George Mason baseball team dropped its second straight game to start the season, falling 16-2 to Richmond on Saturday at Joseph Riley, Jr. Park in Charleston, S.C.
Mason (0-2) fell behind 3-0 in the first inning when Daniel Brumbaugh drove in a pair of runs with a triple off of starter
Bryce Nightengale. Brumbaugh then scored on a throwing error, one of three errors committed by the Patriots in the inning.
In the third inning, Richmond (1-1) increased the lead to 5-0 when Sage Bruhl knocked in two runs with a two-out single. The Spiders tacked on another run in the fourth to extend their advantage to 6-0.
Richmond sent nine batters to the plate in the fifth inning and scored three more runs to make the score 9-0.
The Patriots dented the scoreboard in the top of the sixth.
Frank Sturek led off the inning with a walk and with one out,
Brady Acker tripled to right-center, with Sturek scoring all the way from first.
Logan Driscoll then drove in his first run of the season with a sacrifice fly, with Acker coasting home to make the score 9-2.
The Spiders added five runs in the sixth and two in the seventh for the 16-2 final score.
Nightengale (1-0) allowed six runs, five earned, on four hits in 3.2 innings of work. He struck out five and walked three.
Mason used six pitchers in the game. A trio of Mason freshmen made their NCAA debuts, with
Austin Cabone,
James Price and
Michael Yuille each taking the hill in the game.
Trevor Kelly went 2-for-4 with a double and a single. Freshman
Scott Morgan collected his first collegiate hit with a pinch-hit single in the seventh inning.
The Patriots play their final game in the Charleston Crab House Challenge when the face No. 13 Louisville on Sunday. The first pitch is scheduled for 11 a.m. at Joseph Riley, Jr. Park in Charleston, S.C.
