PITTSBURGH, Pa. – The George Mason University men's tennis team dropped a 6-1 contest to Dayton (7-2, 3-1) to open A-10 play Saturday in Pittsburgh.
 
Mason (2-1, 0-1) was led by freshman Carter Bradford, who won an 8-5 pro set at No. 6 singles to pick up his third singles victory in as many matches in 2018.
 
"We played a very tough team today – credit to Dayton for playing at a high level across the board," head coach Jimmy Davis said. "We have another level of tennis we have not yet been able to reach, but in each match we are taking steps as a team toward getting there. Carter stepped up and took out a very tough opponent. He's continuing to improve and we're excited to see him progress each practice and with each match he plays."
 
In doubles action, senior Daniel Gutierrez and freshman Ryan Charles grabbed a win at No. 1 while pulling out a 7-5 decision. But Mason dropped the other two doubles matches as the Flyers took the doubles point, 2-1.
 
Dayton then took wins at No. 3, No. 1 and No. 2 singles – in that order – to clinch the match.
 
At No. 4, Gutierrez battled hard in his pro set, falling in a 9-7 final score to Theodor Jener.
 
The Patriots will get back to work Sunday and look to get back to .500 in A-10 play with a contest in Pittsburgh against Duquesne (3 p.m.).

"Tomorrow is a great opportunity to improve our seeding in the A-10, and we definitely have areas of improvement from today that can be utilized immediately to help make it happen," Davis said. "We're looking forward to stepping up to the challenge."
