FAIRFAX, Va. - Back home for only the second time in a month, the George Mason women's basketball team combined efficient offense and stellar defense to continue its dominance against out-of-conference foes at home.
The Patriots' sophomore trio of
Camarie Gatling,
Nicole Cardaño-Hillary and
Marika Korpinen combined for 46 points in a 72-46 victory over Delaware on Thursday night at EagleBank Arena. Gatling led the way with her second career double-double, posting a personal-best 17 points and 10 rebounds. Cardaño-Hillary added 16 points and five steals and Korpinen had 13 points and six rebounds.
The Patriots (5-4) led by as many as 28 points in the second half as they extended their non-conference home winning streak to 14 games. The Blue Hens (3-5) shot just 32.1 percent and scored their fewest points of the season. It marked the second time this season Mason has held an opponent to less than 50 points.
"Very good team win for us tonight," head coach
Nyla Milleson said. "Probably the most exciting thing was we were back home at EagleBank Arena. It has been a long time. A little bit of a roller coaster offensively. But, when we had it going offensively, we were pretty good. I thought we were just really solid defensively all night long. I think that was one of the differences - we didn't let our offense affect our defense, which is really, really important. Great win for our team."
Mason shot 60 percent over the first nine minutes to build a nine-point lead after the first quarter and never looked back. The Patriots shot 45.9 percent from the field, scoring more than 70 points for the fifth time this season. Mason also outrebounded Delaware 47-28. The Patriots also dominated the paint, holding a 40-16 advantage.
Gatling, making her fourth straight start, shot 6-of-8 from the field, set a career high with five free throws and tied personal-bests with two blocked shots and two assists. Korpinen, also registering her fourth consecutive start, made three 3-pointers, including one right before halftime that gave Mason a 11-point lead at the break. Cardaño-Hillary, the Atlantic 10's leading scorer, scored in double figures for the 42nd time in her career (out of 43 games).
Nine players scored for the Patriots, who snapped a two-game losing streak and were playing their first home game since Nov. 18. Junior
Sarah Kaminski scored all eight of her points in the first five minutes of the game. Junior
Allie McCool, making her second career start, scored six points and freshman
Livija Kaktaite scored a career-high six points off the bench. Junior
Jacy Bolton tied a career high with five assists and grabbed six rebounds.
Mason hits the road to play Eastern Kentucky at 2 p.m. on Sunday in Richmond, Ky., in its final non-conference road game of the regular season.
