FAIRFAX, Va. - The George Mason University men's basketball team wrapped up an early holiday present for head coach
Dave Paulsen, putting together a complete effort in an 84-63 victory over Navy Friday night inside EagleBank Arena.
Mason (6-6) shot 51.8 percent from the floor, made 11 3-pointers on 25 attempts (.440) and held Navy to just 33.3 percent shooting (20-60) during a game in which the Patriots never trailed.
"I thought that was a really good effort by our guys for the vast majority of the game," Paulsen said. "For the most part, I thought we defended at a high level. That's back-to-back games where we have the makings of becoming a good defensive team. We had great contributions from a lot of different guys."
Otis Livingston II led the Patriots offensively in a vintage game for the senior. The Linden, N.J., product notched a season-high 30 points – the third 30-point effort of his career – and made 11-of-17 field goals on the night. He also connected on a quartet of 3-pointers and added four rebounds and three assists.
In the process, Livingston II moved past former Mason great Sherrod Wright and into sixth place on the all-time Patriot scoring list. He's now up to 1,612 points in his career.
Junior
Justin Kier tallied his second-straight double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds. He also dished out a game-high five assists and made 4-of-5 attempts from the charity stripe.
Fellow junior
Ian Boyd made a career-best four 3-pointers – all in the second half – and grabbed a season-high seven rebounds in 17 minutes.
Mason was +9 (40-31) on the glass and held a distinct advantage in the paint. The Patriots enjoyed a 34-14 edge in points in the paint for the game.
The Patriots came out strong on both ends of the floor in the first half. Mason jumped out to an early 10-2 lead and held Navy to just a 3-for-16 start from the floor. A 10-3 run pushed the Patriot edge to 13 (20-7) at the 11:56 mark, but Navy rallied to get back within seven (23-16) with 6:30 to go in the half. Mason got it back to 10 at 29-29 and closed the half on an 8-0 spurt to take a 39-22 edge into the break. Heading into the half, the Midshipmen were at just 27 percent shooting, while Mason was at 50 percent. The Patriots held a 16-2 edge in points in the paint for the stanza.
In the second half, Mason was able to maintain their lead over the Midshipmen. Despite Navy cutting the lead to just 10 (46-36) at the 15:36 mark, Navy could not move closer for the remainder of the game. Livingston continued his hot streak heading into the second half, as he was perfect 5-5 from field goal range.
After Navy moved within 10, the Patriots used a 10-3 spurt to build the lead back to 15 (54-39) with 13:23 to play. Mason used another 8-0 spurt to take their largest lead of the game (65-42) with 9:44 to go.
Mason tallied three blocks in the second stanza. Wilson recorded two of the blocks, one of which was preceded by him scoring off a fast break sending the crowd into a frenzy at the 9:18 mark.
Mason hits the road to end non-conference play with a contest at Kansas State. The Dec. 29 contest will be televised on Fox Sports Kansas City and streamed on ESPN3 (8 p.m.).
