HISTORY vs. VERMONT
Monday's game marks the third all-time meeting between Mason and Vermont. The two teams played a home-and-home series in the 2007-08 and 2008-09 seasons. The Patriots won in Fairfax, 60-53, on Nov. 9, 2007 and claimed an overtime thriller, 80-79, in Burlington on Nov. 15, 2008. The game marked the season opener for Mason in both campaigns.
HISTORY vs. AMERICA EAST OPPONENTS
Mason is 18-11 (.621) all time against teams currently in the America East Conference. Mason's most common opponents are UMBC (12-8), Hartford (2-0), Maine (0-2) and Vermont (2-0). The bulk of the UMBC meetings came in the 1970s when the two teams were conference partners in NAIA District 19 and the Mason-Dixon Conference (Div. II). In the most recent matchup with an America East foe, the Patriots defeated Binghamton, on Nov. 16, 2017.
A LOOK AT THE CATAMOUNTS (5-3, 0-0 AMERICA EAST; KenPom No. 118)
Vermont was picked to win the America East in the league's 2018-19 preseason poll. The Catamounts have won 20+ games in 10-straight seasons and 17 of the past 20. The team has posted a 61-17 (.782) overall record dating back to the start of the 2016-17 season, including a stellar 31-1 mark in America East play. The Catamounts won the league's regular season title in 2018 and qualified for the NIT after falling to UMBC in the America East Championship game. Vermont earned a berth in the NCAA Tournament in 2017.
This season, Vermont is 5-3 and has been highly competitive in losses at Kansas and Louisville. The Catamounts are 75th nationally in offensive efficiency but are one of the slowest teams in America, ranking 333th in tempo and 326th in possession length (19.0 seconds/possession). The Catamounts are led by Lou Henson Award candidate Anthony Lamb, who paces the team in scoring (18.8 ppg), rebounding (7.8 rpg) and blocks (2.4 bpg). Ernie Duncan averages 16.0 points and shoots 47.9 percent (23-48) from 3-point range, while Stef Smith chips in 14 points and 4.6 rebounds per contest.
