FAIRFAX, Va. – George Mason University women's volleyball snapped VCU's 13-game winning streak to hand the Rams their first conference loss on Saturday night. The Patriots swept the Rams for its second-straight sweep and third-straight win.
Mason handed VCU its first A-10 loss in over 29 matches, a streak dating back to 2016. The Patriots improve to 8-4 in the conference and 6-3 at home this season.
"Tonight was a real battle for our program and I'm so proud of how we competed for every single point," said head coach
Aylene Ilkson. "I think a balanced offense and minimizing errors led to the victory tonight. We are looking forward to getting back to work tomorrow and finishing out the regular season on a high note."
In the opening set of play, back-to-back service aces by sophomore
Alessia Del Romano gave Mason a 9-6 advantage. A kill by Niu extended the Patriots' lead to five, 15-10. VCU did not go away so easily as the Rams went on a four-point run of its own to tie the set 18 all. In the final stages of the match, Mason and VCU sat tied 22-22. That is when Niu stepped up for the Patriots, supplying the final three points for Mason
– winning the set, 25-23.
After exchanging points in the early stages of the second set, four-straight points by Mason gave them a 11-10 advantage. VCU responded with a 6-1 run to take a three-point lead, 19-16. Williams added one of her 13 kills late in the set to tie up the match, 20-20. The final points of the set saw five ties but kills by Niu and senior
Maddie French gave Mason the win in extra points, 26-24.
VCU jumped out to a 4-1 lead to start the third set. Mason fought back to find the match tied 10 all. Mason responded with three-straight points to force a Rams timeout. Another four-point run by the Patriots extended their lead to six, 20-14. Mason stayed in control for the remainder for the set. Niu's 16th kill of the match gave Mason the set, 25-17, and match.

- Freshman Peyton Ehmke had six kills with no errors for a .545 hitting percentage. The middle blocker added six blocks, including two solo blocks.
