KANSAS CITY – The day after Thanksgiving, the George Mason women's basketball team made sure to spread the wealth for an impressive road victory.
The Patriots posted a textbook team win as nine players scored in a 91-84 victory over UMKC on Friday afternoon at Swinney Recreation Center. Five players scored in double figures, led by 16 points from guard Nicole Cardano-Hillary, and Mason dished out a season-high 21 assists.
The Patriots (4-2) never trailed, but fended off several furious rallies by UMKC (0-5). Mason shot 46.8 percent from the field and built a 12-point lead early in the third quarter.
But the Kangaroos sprinted back, due in large part to 13 3-pointers. UMKC ripped off a 15-3 run, capped off by a 3-pointer by Awal Ajak's to tie the game at 51-51 with 2:37 left in the third quarter.
The Patriots responded, though, with a 10-2 run to end the period. After two free throws by
Allie McCool,
Sarah Kaminski drained a long 3-pointer from the top of the key. She then sunk another trey on the next possession after a pair of offensive rebounds by the Patriots. McCool's offensive putback with 18 seconds left gave Mason a 61-53 advantage after three quarters.
UMKC wouldn't fade away, however, opening the final quarter with an 8-2 spurt. Ericka Mattingly's layup off a turnover tied the game up one final time with 7:57 to go.
After a Mason timeout, the Patriots answered once again, with a basket by
Jacy Bolton on the ensuing possession. Cardano-Hillary and Bolton got to the line, making four straight free throws for a six-point lead with 6:29 left. One of Emily Ivory's seven 3-pointers cut the lead to three but Kaminski responded with her fifth 3-pointer with 5:13 left.
Mason's lead never dwindled lower than four after that. Two free throws by Korpinen with 1:01 left gave the Patriots a comfortable 10-point lead.
Kaminski and Korpinen each scored 15 points. Korpinen, making her first start of the season, scored 11 of her career-high 15 points in the first half. Kaminski came off the bench and sank a career-high five 3-pointers.
Bolton posted her third double-double in four games with 13 points and 12 rebounds. The junior captain also added four assists and tied a career high with three steals and zero turnovers. The 6-foot wing was playing in front of another huge crowd of family and friends from her hometown of Drexel, Mo., only 45 miles south of Kansas City.
McCool also came off the bench to score a career-high 12 points, notching her second straight game scoring in double figures after scoring 11 points at Kansas on Wednesday.
Cardano-Hillary, averaging an Atlantic 10-best 22.4 points entering Friday's game, scored 12 points after halftime and made a personal-best 12 free throws to go along with four assists. Junior
Alexsis Grate also dished out a career-high six assists.
Mason won the rebounding battle 42-34, including 19 offensive rebounds and received 38 points off the bench.
The Patriots return to Northern Virginia and will make the short trip to play Howard at 7 p.m. on Wednesday in Washington, D.C.
