NEW YORK – The George Mason women's volleyball team suffered a heartbreaking five-set loss to Fordham on Saturday afternoon. The Patriots finish regular season play with an overall record of 10-14 and a conference record of 8-6.
The season continues for the Patriots as they now head to the Atlantic 10 Tournament for the first time in program history. Mason, the fourth seed, will take on the fifth seed in the quarterfinals at 2 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 16 at the Seigel Center in Richmond, Va. Opponent is to be determined.
"It was a disappointing finish that we let slip through our fingers," said head coach
Aylene Ilkson. "I'm confident that the team will use this as motivation to get prepared and focused for the week ahead."
It was tight set between the two teams to open the match. After exchanging points, a kill by junior
Katrina Santos gave Mason a 9-8 lead. Later in the set, Fordham went on a 5-0 scoring run to open its lead, 16-11. Later, the Patriots cut the Rams' lead to two, 18-16, after a kill by Niu. But five-straight points by the Rams proved to be too much for the Patriots as Fordham took the first set, 25-18.
The Patriots jumped out to a commanding 13-7 lead to start the second set. The offensive attack for Mason continued for a score of 17-11. It was all freshmen to close out the set. Three-straight kills by Hardy, Niu and Ehmke lifted the Patriots to the set win, 25-19.
With the match tied 1-1, the third set was a battle between the two teams. Fordham led by as much as six but the Patriots were able to cut the Rams' lead to two, 22-20. Ultimately, Fordham went on to win the set, 25-21.
Fordham jumped out to a hot start, taking an 8-4 lead in the fourth set. That is when Williams took the set into her own hands. At the Rams timeout, the junior outside hitter had tabbed six kills to cut Fordham's lead to one, 13-12. Mason continued to dominate in the fourth set, winning 25-21 and forcing a fifth set. Williams finished with eight kills in the set.
In the fifth set, Mason jumped out to an early 10-6 lead. Kills by Ehmke and Niu gave Mason a 14-11 lead. Fordham did not go away so easily, scoring three-straight points to tie up the set. Ultimately, the Rams claimed the final set in extra points, 17-15, to win the match.

- After missing 12 games due to injury, Hardy made a dominating return to the court, finishing with 15 kills on a .200 hitting percentage.
- Williams finished regular season play with a career-high nine double-doubles.
