One of the bright spots on the court for George Mason men's basketball through two games has been the improved play of sophomore
Javon Greene.
Greene leads the Green & Gold through the first two games of the season in total points (27), points per game (13.5), total rebounds (16) and rebounds per game (8.0).
Greene put together an outstanding performance on Friday night against American University, recording his first career double-double. The guard led the team with a career highs in points scored (18) and rebounds (12) in a personal best 34 minutes of play off the bench.
Greene also shared a team-high with
Otis Livingston II in takeaways, recording two steals, and hitting 10 of 11 free throws, including two crucial charity stripe conversions with 22 seconds remaining in regulation to send the game to overtime. The sophomore also scored seven of the Patriots' nine points in the overtime period and made a number of critical plays on defense.
The McDonough, Ga. native was also productive in Mason's home opener against the University of Pennsylvania, where he scored nine points and recorded four rebounds off the bench.
The lefty seems to have gotten a lot more comfortable to start off his sophomore season, as the transition from freshman year to sophomore year has been extremely beneficial to him.
"The game seems to be slowing down as the years go on," Greene said. "I am just playing my role, which is to help this team succeed."
Greene believes his abilities can not only help himself during the game, but help to energize his teammates, whether that is playing great defense or supporting his teammates on the bench.
"I feel like it has been a great transition from freshman year to sophomore year already and I feel like I can contribute a lot this season."
Hopefully for Greene and the entire Mason basketball program the sophomore can continue to build on these early career highs and help the team continue to compete in non-conference play.
Next week, the Patriots go on the road and face Georgia Southern on Tuesday, November 13 at 7 p.m. The game will be broadcast on ESPN+. The Patriots will look to avenge a home loss against the Eagles last season (Dec. 12, 2017).
