FAIRFAX, Va. – George Mason women's volleyball will host Davidson at 7 p.m. on Friday at the RAC for Senior Night and Mason's Game of the Week. The match will honor seniors Espinoza, French, Leite and Jarvenpaa.
The Patriots wrap up the weekend with VCU on Saturday, with first serve scheduled for 7 p.m. at the RAC.
Mason will look to clinch a spot in the Atlantic 10 Championship this weekend. The Patriots hope to make the post-season tournament for the first time in the program's six-year history in the Atlantic 10.
NEWS AND NOTES
- Mason defeated GW 3-1 on Oct. 25 to improve to 6-4 in the Atlantic 10. The Patriots road win against the Colonials helped secure its best away record since 2015.
- Freshman ShaLi Niu was named Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week for her performance against GW. The opposite hitter tallied 16 kills, 19 digs and five blocks.
- The Patriots rank fourth in the A-10 with four conference matches remaining.
- Mason is 4-3 at home this season – its best home record since 2016.
- The Patriots have tripled its conference wins from last season with four league matches remaining.
- Earlier this season, Mason fell on the road to both Davidson and VCU.
- Four Mason women's volleyball student-athletes have earned Atlantic 10 weekly honors this season, setting a program record with five A-10 weekly awards.
SCOUTING THE OPPONENTS
Davidson (12-10, 5-6 A-10)
The Wildcats are currently on a two-game losing streak after weekend losses to Saint Louis and Dayton, both in straight sets. Prior to last weekend, Davidson won four-straight games against A-10 opponents.
The Wildcats currently sit in sixth place in A-10 standings.
Senior Mason Rooney ranks first in the NCAA with five triple-doubles. The setter averages 2.65 k/s, 5.10 a/s and 1.85 digs per set.
The last meeting between the programs resulted in a 3-1 loss to for the Patriots. The Wildcats had three players with double-digit kills, including a match-high 16 kills by Rooney. Davidson hit .217 in the match compared to Mason's .130.
Davidson will conclude its regular season with matches against George Washington and VCU.
VCU (16-7, 11-0 A-10)
VCU is currently on a 12-game winning streak, with 11-straight Atlantic 10 victories. The Rams have won their last 26 matches over A-10 opponents.
Last weekend, VCU defeated both Dayton and Saint Louis. The Rams' win over Dayton gave them sole possession of first place in A-10 standings.
Mason will look to control senior outside hitter Vicky Giommarini who leads the team with 2.90 kills per set. On the defensive end, junior Jasmin Sneed leads the A-10 with 1.67 blocks per set.
The last meeting between the Patriots and Rams resulted in a 3-0 loss for Mason. The Patriots struggled offensively for its a hitting percentage of -.009.
VCU will round out the regular season with matches against High Point and Davidson.
