FAIRFAX, Va. – George Mason University women's volleyball wrapped up its six-game homestand with a five-set victory over Rhode Island on Saturday night. The Patriots head into the road stretch of their schedule with a 4-1 Atlantic 10 record.
In the opening set of play, Williams recorded seven of her 22 kills. Rhode Island hit .259 compared to Mason's .179 hitting percentage. This proved to be the deciding factor in the first set as the Rams took the set 25-22.
In the second set of play, Mason was able to go on a five-point run behind
Catie Espinoza's serving. On the defensive end, Espinoza registered seven of her 26 digs to steady the defensive effort. The senior libero allowed Mason to take the second set 25-22.
Mason stepped up defensively in the third set behind four total team blocks. In the set,
Peyton Ehmke tallied three blocks for three and a half points. The Patriots ultimately took a 2-1 lead in the match – winning the set 25-21.
In the fourth set, Mason started on a 6-0 run behind two Williams service aces. Rhode Island then went on several runs of its own to take the fourth set 25-14. The Patriots had its lowest hitting percentage of the match in the fourth set; hitting only -.114.
In the final set, Mason took control early and never looked back. Williams tallied five kills to lift the Patriots over the Rams – winning the set 15-11.
