AMHERST, Mass. – For the second time in three games, the George Mason men's soccer team struggled to muster any offense.
The Patriots manufactured just four shots in a 2-0 loss to Massachusetts in their Atlantic 10 Conference road opener on Saturday afternoon at Rudd Field. Mason (3-5, 1-1 A-10) has been involved in four consecutive shutouts, with two going in their favor and two against.
"The guys fought hard for 90 minutes, so we are pleased with the overall effort," head coach
Greg Andrulis said. "Our execution tactically in the final third was lacking today. Credit to UMass for a solid defensive effort but we can be better with proper execution.
On Saturday, they surrendered a costly early goal to the Minutemen (5-5-2, 1-2). DeAndrae Brown scored just three minutes in from about three yards away. Brown then added some insurance in the 36th minute when he converted a penalty kick.
"That early goal was soft and shouldn't happen, but we bounced back and kept fighting," Andrulis said. "Now we turn our attention and preparation to our next match."
UMass outshot the Patriots 19-4 as Mason goalkeeper
Clark Gronek made four saves. The Patriots had just two shots on goal. Sophomore
Colin Brezniak led the team with two shots, including one on goal.
Mason will be back in action at 7 p.m. on Wednesday when it plays La Salle in Philadelphia.
