FAIRFAX, Va. – George Mason University women's volleyball continues its best start in Atlantic 10 play with a 3-1 win over Fordham on Friday night. The Patriots are on a three-game winning streak heading into tomorrow's match against Rhode Island at 5 p.m. at the RAC.
It was a historic night for several Patriots. Senior
Catie Espinoza set a program record at Mason for career digs with 1,278 digs. Espinoza shattered a 24-year-old record previously held by Jennifer Dinaberg ('91-'94).
Sophomore
Emily Konchan also recorded her 1,000th career assist in Mason's victory over Fordham. Konchan is only the 11th Patriot to achieve this feat.
In the opening set, Mason jumped out to an early 11-3 lead. Konchan only needed four assists to record her 1,000th career assist. The sophomore setter hit the mark before the match's first timeout. The Patriots finished on a four-point run to claim the set 25-9.
Heading into tonight's match, Espinoza only needed 12 digs to break Mason's all-time career digs record. The libero collected her 12th dig in the second set of play to give her the program record. Mason controlled the tempo of the set – winning 25-17.
The third set of play saw a close match between the Patriots and Rams. In the final stages of the set, Mason held a lead of 21-20. A 4-1 run by the Rams gave them a lead of 24-22. This proved to be too much for the Patriots as they dropped the set 25-23.
The final set of play was all Mason. An ace by
Licie Leite extended Mason's lead 20-11 late in the set. Fordham made a run of its own but
Bailey Williams' 17th kill sealed the victory for the Patriots – winning the set 25-22.
