WASHINGTON – George Mason women's volleyball improves to 8-12 overall and 6-4 in the Atlantic 10 after a 3-1 victory over Revolutionary Rival George Washington on Thursday night. The Patriots recorded 94 digs for its first match with their total digs in the 90's range since 2012 (92, vs. James Madison).
This win gives Mason athletics a 4-0 lead in the Revolutionary Rivalry series.
"I was really impressed with our composure tonight," said head coach
Aylene Ilkson. "We were able to maintain good leads and I was super happy that we could finish out the match with such focus and energy."
Freshman
Peyton Ehmke started the Patriots off strong in the first, playing a role in Mason's first three points. At the first timeout of the match, Mason held a 10-7 advantage. Later in the set, the Colonials went on a 7-1 run to claim a 17-13 lead. Three-straight kills by the Patriots gave Mason a 20-19 advantage. Mason and GW exchanged points late as the set was decided in extra points. The Patriots took the first set 27-25 after a kill by Niu.
To start the second set, GW jumped out to an early 6-1 lead. Mason inched away at GW's lead to tie it up 18 all. The Colonials scored three-straight points to extend its lead, 21-18. GW finished the set on a 7-1 run to take the second, 25-19.
Konchan started the third set off with two-straight service aces. Mason continued its strong attack to claim a 7-2 lead, forcing a GW timeout. The Patriots jumped out to a seven-point lead after a kill by Williams, 15-8. At the GW timeout, Mason claimed a six-point lead for a 21-15 advantage. The Patriots' offense proved to be too much for the Colonials – winning the set 25-18.
Mason and GW exchanged points early but a three-point run by the Patriots forced a timeout by GW, 11-8. Another five-point run by Mason extended its lead 16-9. Later in the set, Mason scored three-straight points for a lead of 23-14. The Patriots claimed the final set 25-18 to clinch the victory.
NOTABLE STATS
- Both Konchan and Williams tabbed their sixth double-double of the season.
- Mason had its highest hitting percentage (.387) and had only one attacking error in the third set.
- The Patriots out blocked the Colonials 11 to eight.
