FAIRFAX, Va. – George Mason University women's volleyball wraps up its five-game road stretch against George Washington this Thursday. The Patriots will travel to the District for a 7 p.m. matchup at the Charles E. Smith Center.
Mason is coming off a 1-1 weekend. The Patriots claimed a five-set comeback victory over Duquesne on Friday but fell to La Salle in straight sets on Sunday.
In the first installment of the Revolutionary Rivalry series this season, Mason defeated GW 3-1 on Sept. 28 in Fairfax, Va. The Colonials claimed the first set but the Patriots responded by taking the final three sets. Mason's defense proved to be the deciding factor as it tallied 19 blocks in the victory.
NEWS AND NOTES
- The Patriots sit tied for fourth in the Atlantic 10 standings with five matches left in the season.
- Friday's victory over Duquesne was the first time since 2016 that Mason women's volleyball overcame a 2-0 deficit to win a match in five sets.
- Freshman ShaLi Niu tallied a career-high 28 kills in Mason's 3-2 win over Duquesne. The opposite hitter also contributed seven digs, three aces and three blocks.
- Two Patriots recorded double-doubles in the Patriots' win over the Dukes: sophomore Emily Konchan (55 assists/14 digs) and junior Bailey Williams (10 kills/12 kills).
- Senior Catie Espinoza averaged 5.75 digs per set on the weekend. She ranks third in the Atlantic 10 with 4.72 digs per set.
SCOUTING GEORGE WASHINGTON
George Washington (8-13, 2-7) is currently on a six-game losing streak with its most recent losses coming against La Salle, 3-1, and Duquesne, 3-2.
The Colonials are led by Skylar Iott and Jaimeson Lee, offensively. Iott leads the team in kills per set (3.78) while Lee averages 9.28 assists per set.
GW sits tied for eighth in Atlantic 10 standings. This will be the Colonials lone match of the week before taking on VCU and Davidson next weekend to round out the home part of their schedule.
