FAIRFAX, Va. – On a cold, autumn night, the George Mason men's soccer team struggled to heat up.
The Patriots suffered a 3-0 shutout loss to Duquesne on Saturday night at George Mason Stadium. Mason (4-6, 2-2 Atlantic 10) surrendered three goals after halftime and recorded just one shot on goal.
Duquesne (3-7-2, 1-2-1) broke through in the 48th minute on a goal from Morit Kappelsberger inside the near post from eight yards out off a cross.
The Dukes then added an insurance goal in the 66th minute. On a ball sent in by Kappelsberger from midfield, Ian Larson beat his defender and smacked a shot past Mason goalkeeper Clark Gronek
. Nathan Dossantos capped off the scoring with a one-touch goal in the 74th minute.
Mason, on the other hand, didn't record its shot on goal until late in the second half. The Patriots were outshot 17-8. Gronek made three saves in his eighth straight start.
Before the game, the Patriots inducted three new members into the George Mason Men's Soccer Hall of Fame. Raul Ricaurte ('72), Jonathan Borrajo ('09) and Richard Edgar ('09) were enshrined at a ceremony at Brion's grille on Saturday afternoon. The alums and their families were later recognized at halftime.
The Patriots return to action at 7 p.m. on Wednesday against Saint Joseph's at George Mason Stadium.
