FAIRFAX, Va. – After a thrilling comeback to open up Atlantic 10 play at home on Sunday, the George Mason women's basketball team hits the road in hopes of staying perfect in league action.
The Patriots play La Salle at 7 p.m. on Wednesday in Philadelphia in their Atlantic 10 road opener. Mason (12-3, 1-0 A-10) has won six of seven and is trying to improve to 2-0 in A-10 play for the second straight season.
On Sunday, the Patriots closed out 2017 with a 74-61 come-from-behind victory over Davidson at EagleBank Arena on New Year's Eve. Mason erased a 21-point, first-half deficit thanks to 19 points and 28 rebounds, which broke the school record and tied the A-10 mark, by center
Natalie Butler. The Fairfax Station, Va., native leads the country in rebounding (14.9 rpg), is tied for the most double-doubles (14) in the nation and ranks first in the A-10 in scoring (18.7 ppg).
Freshman Nicole Cardano-Hillary scored 16 of her 18 points in the second half and also nabbed five steals and dished out four assists against Davidson. She helped spark an 18-2 run that pulled the Patriots within three midway through the third period. She then hit back-to-back baskets in the final quarter to push Mason in front for good and ignite a 20-4 spurt to end the game.
The 5-foot-7 point guard from Madrid, Spain, was named the A-10 Rookie of the Week on Tuesday. She averaged 16 points, five rebounds, 4.5 steals and three assists in a pair of wins last week. She ranks fourth in the A-10 with 17.3 points a game.
La Salle (5-8, 0-1) has lost five of six and dropped 76-47 decision to Dayton on Sunday at home in Philadelphia. The Explorers were without leading scorer Amy Griffin against the Flyers due to an injury. Griffin, a senior guard who has led the A-10 in scoring the last two seasons, is averaging 16.2 points, 5.9 rebounds and 3.8 assists – all team-highs.
The Explorers lead the all-time series against Mason 5-2. La Salle edged Mason 59-57 in the teams' lone meeting last January in Tom Gola Arena in Philadelphia. Griffin sunk a game-winning jumper with .7 seconds left. Mason's
Alexsis Grate nearly won the game for the Patriots but her halfcourt shot rolled off the rim.
