FAIRFAX, Va. – The George Mason women's soccer team plays its first Atlantic 10 road game, facing Dayton at 12:30 p.m. on Thursday at Baujan Field in Dayton, Ohio.
Mason (4-6-0) has won four straight games, outscoring opponents by a combined score of 14-5.
The Patriots erased three one-goal deficits in the first half of play in a 4-3 victory over George Washington in the Atlantic 10 opener for both teams on Thursday. Junior
Emily Littell finished with a goal and three assists in the game.
Freshman
Amanda Nhek and classmate
Kayla Hamric each scored their first NCAA goal. Nhek netted the game-tying goal with just over a minute remaining in the first half, while Hamric tallied the game-winner in the 71st minute of play.
"It's something that we point out to the team on a regular basis, how important the players in those roles are that come into games for us," Mason head coach
Todd Bramble said. "We've got a nice collection of players on the team this year. We are confident putting them in any game situation no matter who the opponent is."
Four players have scored their first career goals this season for Mason.
The Patriots have controlled the play in the offense end of the field over the last four games. Mason has had 39 corner kicks while opponents have managed only 13. The Patriots have also converted on three penalty kicks.
"I think it says a lot about how much time we are spending in the penalty area," Bramble said. "Last year we were more of a team that had to sit back and defend and counter attack. Now, we have sustained pressure and consistent play in and around the penalty area and it makes defenders have to work harder."
Mason ranks second in the Atlantic 10 in shots (157), third in goals (16) and fourth in goals per game (1.6).
Emily Littell is tied for the team lead in goals (3) and paces the Patriots in points (11), both career highs. Junior
Rebecca Callison is tied for the team lead with a career-high three goals and is second on the squad with a career-best seven points.
Littell ranks second in the Atlantic 10 in assists (5) and fourth in points (11).
Mason has had 11 players record a goal and 14 players register at least one point over the first 10 games, while four different players have scored a game-winning goal.
Freshman goalkeeper
Louisa Moser (7 games/614 minutes) has made 19 saves and enters the weekend with a 1.76 goals against average.
Mason looks to earn a win at Dayton for the first time in program history. The Patriots are 0-2-0 all-time on the road against the Flyers.
"The stakes are higher and we are focusing on getting points this time of year," Bramble said. "You want to try to get three points from every home game you play and any points you can from away games. The fact that points are a focal point for all the teams right now really makes the games more intense."
SCOUTING DAYTON
Dayton has an overall record of 5-4-1. The Flyers are 3-0-0 at home and 2-4-1 on the road.
The Flyers haven't allowed a goal home this season, outscoring opponents by a combined 9-0. Dayton has recorded 3-0 wins over each of its three opponents at home, defeating Saint Francis (Aug. 27), Marshall (Sept. 1) and Ohio (Sept. 15).
Dayton has an all-time record of 221-64-22 in games played at Baujan Field. Over the last six seasons, the Flyers are 65-12-7 (.843) at home.
Dayton played to a 0-0 draw at VCU on Thursday. Junior goalkeeper Kaelyn Johns recorded a career-high 10 saves in the game. Johns was named the Atlantic 10 Co-Defensive Player of the Week for games played Sept. 11-17 after posting back-to-back shutout wins.
Senior Alexis Kiehl and sophomore Micayla Livingston are tied for the team lead in goals (4) and points (10), while junior Nadia Pestell leads the Flyers in assists (4).
The Flyers have won the A-10 Tournament Championship 10 times since 1996, more than any other team in the conference. Dayton has appeared in the A-10 tournament 20 times, earning a berth every year the Flyers have been in the conference.
"They've been at the top of the conference and dominated with the number of championships they have won," Bramble said of the matchup. "We know that they will be well-coached and they are a talented team. It will be a tremendous challenge for us and we are looking forward to the opportunity."
CORNER KICK
Last season, the Patriots defeated the Flyers 2-1 on Oct. 2, 2016 at George Mason Stadium. The victory was the first for Mason over Dayton in 28 years. Before last season, the Patriots lone win over the Flyers was a 1-0 victory in Fairfax, Va. during the 1988 season.
