FAIRFAX, Va. – The George Mason women's soccer team scored a pair of goals in the second half in a 2-0 win over Penn on Sunday afternoon at George Mason Stadium.
Mason (3-6-0) won its third straight game, while Penn (1-5-2) remained winless on the road this season.
After a scoreless first half, the Patriots took the lead early in the second when junior
Rebecca Callison scored for the second straight game, netting her team-leading third goal of the season in the 47th minute to put the Patriots in front 1-0. Senior
Erin Mitchell and classmate
Niomi Serrano picked up the assists on the tally.
The Patriots put the game away in the 83rd minute when Callison sent a pass to Mitchell, who raced in and found the upper right corner from 10 yards out to make the score 2-0.
"This was a good performance today," Mason head coach
Todd Bramble said. "We mixed up playing a more direct style of play and we did a good job by changing that midway through the game and we attacked from out wide and up the middle. The way we attacked Penn today was very good and Erin was a bright spot in that."
Mitchell has scored two goals over the last three games while recording 13 shots and five shots on goal.
"Over the past week at practice we've been working on increasing our shots on goal, which have been resulting in more goals overall," Mitchell said. "Three wins in a row has really helped us. We just want to keep that going into conference play."
The Patriots have turned things around. After being outscored 14-2 over the first six games of the season, Mason has outscored opponents 10-2 during its three-game winning streak. The Patriots haven't trailed in any of the last three matches.
"It's a resilient group and I think it says a lot about the leadership we have within the team," Bramble said. "I think they believe in each other and what we are doing. It's nice to see us get rewarded by performing consistently. We weren't getting any results in spite of playing well in the first six games, but I'm glad to see that's turned around now."
The Patriots and Quakers each finished with 12 shots and four shots on goal. Mason had nine corner kicks and Penn had four.
Mitchell and Callison each scored and added an assist. Mitchell led the team with three shots, while Callison, seniors
Emily Littell and
Abby Downey and freshman
Kayla Hamric finished with two.
Mason freshman goalkeeper
Louisa Moser made four saves, including three in the second half, to record her first NCAA shutout.
"We are certainly battle tested," said Bramble of Mason's non-conference schedule. "We have played against some of the best teams in the country and today's game felt a lot like every A-10 game is going to be for us. We played against a team that was really difficult to score on, so we had to earn our goals."
The Patriots begin Atlantic 10 Conference action Thursday against George Washington with the kickoff scheduled for 7 p.m. at George Mason Stadium.
