Women’s Tennis to Open 2017-18 Campaign at Mary Washington

Women's Tennis 9/15/2017 1:44:00 PM
FAIRFAX, Va. – The George Mason University women's tennis team will enjoy its first taste of competition this fall at the Mary Washington Kickoff Classic this Saturday and Sunday in Fredericksburg, Va.

The fall tournament format will afford Mason's young, talented roster a number of opportunities to gain valuable reps in a singles flight format. In addition, the Patriots will be able to test out potential doubles pairings prior to beginning the dual schedule this winter.

Mason returns four regular starters from its 2016-17 dual lineup, led by junior Sydney Green, who anchored the Patriots at No. 1 singles for the majority of the campaign. Sophomore Rachel Lee also will play a major role for the Patriots this season. In addition to their singles prowess, Green and Lee paired to post a 12-9 dual doubles record this past season.

In addition, junior Nicole Haigwood and sophomore Liz Lowe return for the Patriots and will look to get their seasons off to a good start this weekend. Haigwood paired with graduated senior Morgan Yang in doubles action last year while posting a strong 16-9 dual mark. She will look to find another complementary partner this season to continue that doubles performance.

Lowe went 11-8 in singles last season – primarily from the No. 6 position – and also went 8-6 in dual play.

The Patriots welcome a talented group of six freshman as well and will enjoy the services of redshirt-junior Lauren Dupuis, who sat out last season after transferring from Louisiana-Lafayette.
