Erin Mitchell scored the game-winning goal with just three seconds remaining in double overtime, lifting the Patriots to a 2-1 victory over Towson on Sunday afternoon at the Tiger Soccer Complex in Towson, Md.
Mitchell scored her first goal of the season, slipping behind the Tigers defense off a free kick from 40 yards out by junior
Emily Littell, who picked up the assist on the tally.
"That's a characteristic and quality that we want to always have from our team, we play the entire game out," Mason head coach
Todd Bramble said. "The team's happy and I'm really happy for them. Statistics were heavily in our favor and we found a way to win today."
Mason (1-6-0) controlled the play throughout the first half, holding the Tigers without a shot for the first 40 minutes of play. In the offensive end of the field, the Patriots recorded three shots on goal in the first half, while Towson didn't register a shot on goal.
The Patriots continued the pressure in the second half and took the lead in the 56th minute of play.
Mason was awarded a penalty kick after a Towson foul inside the box and
Emily Littell netted her first goal of the season, scoring into the lower left corner to put the Patriots in front 1-0.
Towson (3-3-2) evened the match in the 71st minute. Tigers senior Maddie Bove scored her third goal of the season, finding the net off a cross to the far post to make it a 1-1 game.
Both teams had a chance to end the match in the first overtime.
Mitchell hit the post with a header with under four minutes to play, while the Tigers missed on an open header that sailed over the crossbar at the other end just seconds later.
The Patriots finished with a 24-11 advantage in shots, including 11-3 in shots on goal. Mason had nine corner kicks, while Towson had four.

The Patriots earned their 10th straight win over the Tigers and improved to 12-1-0 all-time against Towson.
The Patriots begin a three-game homestand when they host East Tennessee State University on Friday, Sept. 15 at George Mason Stadium. The kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
