FAIRFAX, Va. – The George Mason women's soccer team fell 1-0 to Tennessee in the home opener on Sunday at George Mason Stadium.
In the first meeting between the teams since 2000, Mason (0-2-0) and Tennessee (2-0-0) combined for just two shots on goal in the first half of play. Senior
Erin Mitchell was turned away in the 26th minute with the Patriots lone shot in the first 45 minutes.
The Volunteers scored the lone goal of the match in the 82nd minute when junior Meghan Flynn scored from the left side into the upper right side of the net from 15 yards out.
Mason junior goalkeeper
Morgan Symmers finished with career-high seven saves. Symmers kept the game scoreless with a leaping save with less than a minute to play in the first half. She was tested early in the second half, but again kept the game scoreless by making three stops in a span of four minutes.
"We had a lot of players who had good performances today," Mason head coach
Todd Bramble said. "I don't want to single out too many people, but you can't ignore the game that Morgan had today for us, she was outstanding."
The Volunteers outshot the Patriots 6-5 in the first half and 20-13 in the game. Tennessee finished with eight shots on goal, seven in the second half. The Patriots recorded five shots on goal, four in the second half. The Volunteers had 11 corner kicks, while the Patriots had five.
"We're trying to build with each passing game and look to get better in some areas," Bramble said. "Our commitment to defending and specifically defending set plays was tremendous today. We were a little better in possession and created a number of really good scoring opportunities for ourselves, but credit to Tennessee, they found a way to win."
Mitchell led Mason with six shots, two on goal while freshman
Kayla Hamric registered three shots in the game.
The Patriots are on the road next weekend, facing Howard on Sunday with the kickoff scheduled for 7 p.m. at Greene Stadium in Washington, D.C.
