PHILADELPHIA – For the third straight year, the George Mason women's lacrosse team has qualified for the Atlantic 10 Lacrosse Championship.
This season, the Patriots hope to notch their first win in the A-10 tournament.
No. 4 seed Mason opens up the Atlantic 10 Lacrosse Championship against No. 5 seed Davidson in the first round at 1 p.m. on Thursday at Sweeney Field on the campus of Saint Joseph's. The winner advances to play top-seeded Massachusetts at 1 p.m. on Friday in a semifinal.
The Patriots (11-6, 7-2 A-10) joined the A-10 in 2014 and have qualified for the league tournament each of the last three seasons. But they are 0-2 all-time in A-10 tournament play and look to advance for the first time.
Mason finished in a three-way tie for second place in the league with Saint Joseph's (No. 2 seed) and Richmond (No. 3 seed) but earned the No. 4 seed due to a goal differential tiebreaker. The Patriots just played Davidson less than a week ago in the regular-season finale on Saturday. Mason defeated the Wildcats 19-9 on the road as
Alexa McGovern,
Chachi Kelehan and
Hailey Johnson each scored four goals. Mason leads the all-time series 5-1, including two straight victories over the Wildcats.
The Patriots are led by a balanced scoring attack that includes six players with at least 20 goals. McGovern, a three-time A-10 All-Conference First Team selection, heads the charge with 49 goals – fourth-most in the league. Kelehan is second on the team with 41 goals in addition to 13 assists. In goal, freshman
Melissa Semkiw was named to the A-10 All-Conference Second Team and All-Rookie Team after she posted 102 saves and a .513 save percentage in the regular season.
Davidson (7-9, 5-4) had won three in a row before falling to the Patriots last weekend. The Wildcats are led by Annie Brockett's 43 goals.
