FAIRFAX, Va. – The George Mason University women's tennis team turned a gritty effort into a victory Saturday afternoon during a 4-3 win over Loyola (Md.).
The Patriots battled in competitive matches throughout, but were able to get the doubles point and win three singles matches to pick up another win. Mason is now 12-7 on the year.
"We always seem to have a close match with Loyola," head coach
Stephen Curtis said. "We didn't play particularly well as individuals but we found a way to win as a team."
Mason swept the doubles point on the strength of a pair of good performances.
Morgan Yang and
Nicole Haigwood continued their torrid play of late, winning 6-1 at No. 2 to pick up their third straight doubles win. At No. 1 doubles,
Sydney Green and
Rachel Lee grabbed a 6-2 win.
The Patriots also took the point at No. 6 singles to go up 2-0. Yang put the Patriots up 3-0 with a victory at No. 2 (6-1, 6-0) and the match was clinched at No. 4 by Lee.
Lee took her match in straight sets, 6-4, 7-5. Green and
Scarlett Walston each almost added another point for the Green & Gold, but fell in competitive three set matches on Saturday.
The Patriots return to the Mason Tennis Complex this Thursday with a 4 p.m. match against Monmouth.
