PITTSBURGH – A school record in the circle, a stellar performance by a freshman in goal and a scoring barrage from a quartet of seniors guided the George Mason women's lacrosse team to a convincing win in its first conference road game of the season.
The Patriots defeated Duquesne 17-9 on Friday at Rooney Field to win its Atlantic 10 road opener for the fourth straight season. Junior
Hannah Warpinski set the school record with 13 draw controls, freshman goalkeeper
Melissa Semkiw made 12 saves and seniors
Alexa McGovern (four),
Melissa Lobaccaro (three),
Brooke Lorber (three) and
Jordan Sdanowich (three) combined for 13 goals.
Mason (7-4, 3-0 A-10) improved to 3-0 in conference play for the first time since 2000 when it was still a member of the Colonial Athletic Association. It was also the first win in against the Dukes, who had won the previous three meetings in the series. The Patriots have won three straight and four of five and riding a six-game A-10 winning streak dating back to the end of the last season.
"Duquesne has had our number the past few seasons so it was a good win against a respectable A-10 opponent," George Mason coach
Jessy Morgan said. "(Assistant coach) Kesley (Sheridan) has made adjustments strategically on the draw and I think it made a big difference today. I think we will continue to make strides in that area going forward. Hannah has a ton of room to grow. We (also) have a very balanced attack so if one thing isn't working we have lots of other weapons."
Against Duquesne (2-9, 0-3), the Patriots never trailed. They scored the first four goals of the game and stayed in control for most of the contest. The Dukes pulled within one, 5-4, late in the first half but the Patriots ripped off four goals in the final 4:23 of the half for a 10-4 lead at halftime.
Warpinski had one of the best days of her career with a school-record 13 draw controls to pace the Patriots, who won the draw-control battle 20-8. She broke the school record of 11 set by McGovern just two weeks ago against Longwood. Warpinski has collected 23 draw controls in her last two games.
She also scored two goals, dished out a career-high tying three goals for the third time in four games and picked up four ground balls.
McGovern scored four goals and Lobaccaro, Lorber and Sdanowich each recorded hat tricks. Lorber also had two assists for a five-point game. Junior
Lindsey Tangeman had a goal and three assists. Junior
Holly Tevis also scored a goal and freshman
Hailey Johnson recorded an assist.
Semkiw made her fourth career start and notched 10-plus saves for the second time this season. She allowed just nine goals on 28 shots faced.
The Patriots continue wrap up a short two-game road trip against VCU at 1 p.m. on Sunday in Richmond, Va.
