FAIRFAX, Va. – Last year, for the first time in program history, the George Mason women's lacrosse team won all of its conference road games.
The Patriots hope to duplicate that success on the road in the Atlantic 10 Conference again this season and that journey begins this weekend. Mason plays its A-10 road opener against Duquesne at 4 p.m. on Friday in Pittsburgh. The Patriots will then head south to play VCU at 1 p.m. on Sunday in Richmond, Va.
Mason (6-4, 2-0 A-10) is off to a strong start after winning its first two A-10 games last weekend for its second straight 2-0 start to league play. The Patriots defeated La Salle 15-8 last Friday and followed with a 21-9 rout of St. Bonaventure less than 48 hours later on Sunday. Six players have scored at least 11 goals for Mason and three –
Chachi Kelehan (25 goals),
Melissa Lobaccaro (23) and
Alexa McGovern (21) – have already surpassed the 20-goal mark.
Duquesne (2-8, 0-2) has lost six straight. The Dukes are coming off a 13-10 loss at VCU on Sunday. Junior Jill Vacanti leads the team with 23 goals. Duquesne is 3-0 all-time against Mason, including a 9-8 victory in Fairfax last season.
VCU, in just its second year as a program, is coming off a 13-10 victory to Duquesne. The Rams (5-5, 1-1) are led by Molly Barcikowski (23 goals, 12 assists) and Kerian McTavish (21 goals, 16 assists). Mason defeated the Rams 16-5 in the teams' first and only previous meeting last year in Fairfax.
