FAIRFAX, Va. – With the Atlantic 10 Conference Tournament looming, the George Mason women's lacrosse team hits the road in hopes of closing out the regular season with a win.
The Patriots play Davidson at 1 p.m. on Saturday at Richardson Stadium in Davidson, N.C. Mason (10-6, 6-2 A-10) looks to snap a two-game losing streak and solidify its seeding for the A-10 Tournament.
If the tournament started today, Mason, in a three-way tie for second with Richmond and Saint Joseph's, would be the No. 4 seed due to the tiebreaker scenarios. The Patriots could still finish as high as a second. But a win would guarantee them no worse than the four seed. The six-team A-10 Tournament begins on Wednesday at Saint Joseph's in Philadelphia and runs through Sunday, May 7.
Davidson (7-8, 5-3) can't do any worse than the No. 5 seed and could end up being Mason's first-round opponent next week. After starting conference play with a 2-3 mark, the Wildcats have won three straight and are coming off a 17-6 victory at La Salle on Sunday. Senior Annie Brockett leads Davidson with 40 goals.
Mason leads the all-time series against Davidson 4-1. The Patriots defeated Davidson 8-7 last year in Fairfax thanks to three straight goals late in the second half that allowed Mason to pull away.
The Patriots are coming off consecutive losses last weekend to Saint Joseph's and Massachusetts after they started off A-10 action with a 6-0 mark. Mason let a four-goal lead slip away against the Hawks, who stormed back in the second half and pulled away for a 20-10 victory on the Patriots' Senior Day last Friday.
Less than 48 hours later, the Patriots showed resolve, jumping out to a 5-0 victory on seven-time defending A-10 champ UMass. The Minutewomen mounted a rally in the second half and eventually held on for a 18-17 victory. But Mason proved resilient, scoring twice in the final minutes to pull within one before UMass ran out the last 90 seconds. Freshman
Melissa Semkiw made a career-high 19 saves and senior captains
Brooke Lorber and
Alexa McGovern each had four goals and two assists.
