WASHINGTON – The George Mason University women's tennis team (15-8, 2-4) dodged a rainy forecast Saturday but could not overcome a strong George Washington side, falling 6-1 to the Colonials during an afternoon matchup in Southeast D.C.
GW (11-9, 3-3) took the opening doubles point, despite a fierce battle from
Morgan Yang and
Nicole Haigwood at No. 3. The duo fell to their Colonial counterparts, 7-5.
In singles action,
Morgan Yang at No. 2 and
Rachel Lee at No. 4 won their first sets, 7-5, before falling in three.
Mason's point came at No. 6 singles, where Haigwood put forth an excellent showing. She won the first set, 6-2, then overcame a second set defeat (1-6) to claim victory in the third. Her third set win came by the score of 7-5.
Haigwood has now won her last five singles matches.
The Patriots will now culminate their 2017 season next week at the annual Atlantic 10 Championship. This year's event in the spectacular Lake Nonna area of Orlando, Fla., will kick off on April 26. Mason's seed, opponent and match time will be announced in the coming days.
