FAIRFAX, Va.
– George Mason University's softball team will attempt to shake off the negative start of the week when they host Atlantic 10 Conference opponent St. Bonaventure this weekend.
Due to inclement weather expected in the Fairfax area all weekend, Saturday's doubleheader has been rescheduled to start at 11 a.m. rather than the standard noon first pitch.
Mason suffered its first midweek sweep of the season Wednesday in the hands of Revolutionary rival George Washington, 3-0 and 9-5. Home runs by sophomore
Jess Curbeira and freshman
Mary-Elizabeth Luttrell put some pressure on the home team in game two, but GW withstood it to win comfortably in the end.
The setbacks ended Mason's six-game win streak and four-game A-10 win streak. Nevertheless, the Patriots are still sitting two games above the Colonials in the Atlantic 10 Conference standings.
SCOUTING THE OPPONENT
St. Bonaventure is going through a tough season, winning only 10 of its 40 games. The Bonnies' last win came in non-conference play against Niagara on April 12, after which they have lost six-straight, all of them at home. St. Bonaventure gave up 35 runs in Wednesday's conference doubleheader versus four-time defending champion Fordham. Both games were decided by the run rule.
Junior Hailey Blencowe leads the Bonnies in batting average with .300, but Desiree Gonzalez and Alexandra Piergustavo have produced the most hits – 31 apiece – and lead the team with .527 and .486 slugging percentages, respectively.
Junior Josie Borysevitz (5-10) has started 17 games for the Bonnies in 2017 and has picked up half of the team's season with a team-best 4.38 ERA. She has pitched eight complete games for the Bonnies.
