PHILADELPHIA – The George Mason University women's tennis team went 2-for-2 on its Philadelphia swing this weekend, completing the sweep with a 4-3 victory over Saint Joseph's on Sunday afternoon.
After cruising to a 7-0 win over La Salle Saturday night, the Patriots again claimed victory Sunday, but did so by producing a number of clutch points to close out the match.
"This was a great win for Mason over a very solid Saint Joseph's team," head coach
Stephen Curtis said. "Our three seniors stepped up and showed their experience today."
Mason captured two of the three doubles matches to take a 1-0 lead in the match. Trailing 1-0 in the doubles point, the Patriots evened the score after a 6-2 win from No. 3 tandem
Morgan Yang and
Nicole Haigwood. The Patriots clinched the point at No. 1, where
Sydney Green and
Rachel Lee dispatched of their opponents, 6-3. The duo has won three of their past four doubles matches.
SJU tied the score 1-1 with a win at No. 1 singles, but Mason again took the lead (2-1) after a three set victory from Yang at No. 2. She was not rattled after dropping the opening frame, 6-0, as the Springfield, Va., product won the next two sets in dominating fashion, 6-0 & 6-1, to close out her match.
SJU again tied it up (2-2) with a win at No. 4 singles.
Scarlett Walston put Mason back in front (3-2) after winning her match in straight sets (6-3, 6-3).
The Hawks would not go away, as SJU's Contrata won her match at No. 6 singles to bring the contest down to one final matchup.
But
Olivia Lacy-Thompson was up to the challenge at No. 5. The senior won the first set in a tiebreak (7-6), then won the second 6-4 to clinch the match for the Green & Gold.
The Patriots return to action Saturday (April 8) with a noon contest vs. Loyola (Md.) inside the Mason Tennis Complex.
