W: SNYDER, Gabrielle (3-4)
L: Vitalich, Marina (6-7)
FAIRFAX, Va. – The win streak of George Mason University's softball team came to an end on Sunday with a 6-0 loss in the final game at Dayton.
Mason had already ensured the win of the series against the Flyers
with wins in both of Saturday's games, but could not continue the momentum in the series finale.
Just like in the first game Saturday, Dayton got off to a quick start. This time, however, sophomore starter
Marina Vitalich (6-7) could not minimize the damage and the Flyers were up 3-0 after the opening inning.
"We knew this would be a long, tough road trip against a strong opponent in Dayton," Mason head coach
Joe Verbanic said. "It was their day today. They played well and found some holes; we hit a lot of balls hard but right at people.
"We are very pleased with our efforts and to go home after winning the series."
The Patriots could not find a response on the offensive end and were limited by Dayton's Gabrielle Snyder (3-4) to only two hits – one apiece from freshman catcher
Sydnee Wells and sophomore second baseman
Erin Calpin.
The Flyers, on the other hand, remained consistent at bat throughout the game and collected nine hits in it. Only freshman
Bekah Ansbro managed to keep the bases clean for Mason in the sixth inning, but by then the Patriots were trailing 6-0. In the fifth inning Lisa Tassi hit a two-RBI double – her second multi-run hit in the game – which was followed up with an RBI single by Kailee Budicin, who went 4-for-4 at bat in the contest.
NEXT ON THE DIAMOND
Mason begins an eight-game homestand on Wednesday with a non-conference doubleheader against in-state foe Virginia. First pitch in the opening game is at 4 p.m.
