FAIRFAX, Va. – A veteran and a rookie from the George Mason women's lacrosse team received Atlantic 10 Conference accolades on Tuesday.
Senior captain
Alexa McGovern was named the A-10 Co-Player of the Week. Freshman
Melissa Semkiw was named the conference's Rookie of the Week for the second straight week.
McGovern scored 11 goals in two home wins for the Patriots last weekend. The senior from Sykesville, Md., needed just 12 shots to score 11 goals and also tallied six draw controls. Against George Washington, she scored a career-high six goals on seven shots.
Three days later against Richmond, she scored five goals on five shots. She also collected five draw controls. She currently ranks third in the conference with 40 goals, as the Patriots remain undefeated in conference play with a 6-0 mark.
Semkiw continued her stellar play in goal for the Patriots. She totaled 24 saves in two games, making 12 saves in each. She has now recorded 12 saves in four straight games. Against George Washington, the Frederick, Md., product made 12 saves (on 26 shots) while allowing just nine goals. She also corralled three ground balls.
Against Richmond, she also made 12 saves (on 36 shots) and allowed 11 goals while causing a turnover and grabbing a ground ball. For the season, she is 6-0 in 11 games and seven starts.
???????The Patriots (10-4, 6-0 A-10) return to the field at 4 p.m. on Friday when they host Saint Joseph's at George Mason Stadium in their final home game of the regular season. Mason will honor its five seniors –
