FAIRFAX, Va. – The George Mason University women's tennis team put together a perfect 2-0 day while honoring its accomplished senior class on Saturday inside the Mason Tennis Complex.
Mason earned a 5-2 win over top-25 DIII program Christopher Newport, then swept District of Columbia in the afternoon match.
"Senior Day is always an emotional day that sometimes makes it a very difficult one in which to play and stay focused," head coach
Stephen Curtis said. "I was proud of our players for overcoming their emotions and playing some wonderful tennis. The program will miss Morgan, Scarlett and Liv. They have been great role models for our younger players."
Mason vs. No. 24 Christopher Newport
The Patriots took to the courts at 9:30 a.m. for their opening match and took down visiting Christopher Newport.
Mason swept the doubles point to get things started.
Sydney Green and
Rachel Lee won 6-3 at No. 1 and the stellar senior team of
Scarlett Walston and
Olivia Lacy-Thompson also took care of business 6-3 at No. 2. Senior
Morgan Yang teamed with sophomore
Nicole Haigwood to win 6-3 at No. 3.
Yang hammered her opponent at No. 2 singles (6-0, 6-0) to build Mason a 2-0 lead. Lacy-Thompson made it 3-0 with a 6-1, 6-2 win at No. 4.
CNU moved within two (3-1) after a victory at No. 1 and cut it to 3-2 with a win at No. 6.
But from there, the Patriots closed out the match. Haigwood won in three sets at No. 5 (6-2, 3-6, 10-7) and Walston took down her opponent (6-2, 7-5) at No. 3 to give the Patriots five points on the day.
Mason vs. UDC
The Patriots took control in their second match of the day.
Against the UDC Firebirds, Mason again swept the doubles point. Walston and Lacy-Thompson moved to No. 1 on Senior Day and powered past their opponents, 6-1, to win their fourth straight doubles match together. Yang and Haigwood captured their sixth-straight victory with a 6-1 victory at No. 2.
Singles highlights for Mason in the 7-0 sweep included a perfect 6-0, 6-0 win for Lacy-Thompson at No. 4 and a straight sets win for Yang at No. 2 (6-4, 6-2). Yang has won six straight singles matches while Lacy-Thompson has won three in a row.
Yang hit a big milestone during Saturday's action, eclipsing the 100-win mark for her Mason career.
Walston won her match at No. 3 (6-4, 6-1) and Green rounded out the winners with a victory at No. 1 (6-2, 6-4).
Mason returns to action Friday at 3 p.m. with a home match vs. Richmond.
