FAIRFAX, Va. – George Mason University's men's volleyball team enters the final weekend of EIVA regular season in need of two road wins at Saint Francis and Penn State to ensure itself a spot in the conference championship.

The Senior Night defeat to Princeton last Saturday moved Mason to 6-6 in conference play along with Harvard, NJIT and Sacred Heart. The defending champions go into the weekend holding the final postseason ticket in hand due to best head-to-head record – 4-2 – among all teams in the quartet.

Head coach Jay Hosack's team dropped the home matches to both Saint Francis and Penn State in late February. In the contest against the Red Flash, Mason dropped a two-set lead and lost in five sets. The night before, the Nittany Lions defeated the reigning champion 3-1.

SCOUTING THE OPPONENTS

Saint Francis enters the final weekend of regular season on a four-match win streak and with nine wins out of their last 15 matches. The Red Flash currently sits second in EIVA with a 8-4 record and still has a theoretical chance to host the conference championship. That would happen if they win against both Mason and winless Charleston (W.Va.) this weekend while Penn State loses both of its matches against the same opponents. Last weekend, Saint Francis won a five setter at Harvard and had too much in store for Sacred Heart, winning 3-1 where Penn State was swept the night before.

After losing to Sacred Heart, a team that had never defeated them before, for the second time this season, the Nittany Lions triumphed over Harvard by the same scoreline to retain its top spot in the EIVA standings. To bring home the regular season title and to host the 2017 EIVA Championship, the Nittany Lions would have to win just one of its final two matches or hope for Saint Francis to lose at least one contest this weekend.

Both of Mason's opponents boast home records of at least .500. Traditionally strong in front of home crowd, Penn State has lost in Rec Hall only three times this season (10-3) while the Red Flash – one of the teams that won there – has won every other match in the DeGol Arena for a 5-5 record in Loretto.
