FAIRFAX, Va. –
George Mason University's softball team will host third-straight midweek doubleheader Wednesday, this time against Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference leader Hampton.
Mason will go into the event hoping to extend the win streak started with Sunday's series-finale win against Fordham
. The Patriots have split with both of their previous midweek opponents and have a 5-5 home record since the end of the tournament portion of their season.
On Sunday, sophomore Jess Curbeira
put an end to Mason's wait for a home run in Fairfax while at the same time sophomore pitcher Marina Vitalich
(8-8) and the defense behind her put in one of their best performances in the season to orchestrate the 2-1 comeback win against the Rams. Freshman shortstop Madison Aker
batted a seventh-inning run for the win.
SCOUTING THE OPPONENT
Hampton comes into the matchup off its only MEAC loss so far this season. The Pirates lost an 11-inning home affair 6-5 to Delaware State, a team that they had defeated 8-0 in six innings the day before.
This will be the team's second trip to the DMV area after sweeping the three game conference series against Howard in Washington, D.C., outscoring the Bison 25-4. Outside of that series, the Pirates are 1-9 on the road this season.
Taylor Warrick is Hampton's best hitter with .417 average and .633 slugging percentage, both bests among players who have started at least one game. Warrick has accumulated team-high 25 hits this season, nine of them being extra-base hits (five doubles, four triples).
Allyson Babinsack (6-11) is the Pirates' main pitcher with 17 starts and 15 complete games. In 115.1 innings of work, she has a team-best ERA of 3.52.
