FAIRFAX, Va. – The George Mason women's lacrosse team heads into the weekend looking to end March and start April in the same way – with a win.
Plus, the Patriots are hoping to get off to a good start as Atlantic 10 Conference play begins this weekend with a pair of home games. Mason will host La Salle in the A-10 opener for both teams at 5 p.m. on Friday. The Patriots will then close out the weekend at noon on Sunday against St. Bonaventure. As always, admission is free at George Mason Stadium.
Mason (4-4) will try to shake off a 17-12 loss to Oregon at home on Monday night to end non-conference play.
Chachi Kelehan and
Alexa McGovern each scored four goals. But the Patriots lost the draw control battle 20-11 and committed 40 fouls as the Ducks pulled away in the second half.
Against La Salle, the Patriots lead the all-time series 2-1, having won both of the last two meetings. The Explorers (4-4) are coming off a 17-11 loss to High Point last Friday. La Salle is led by senior Allie Ilgenfritz, who has scored 24 goals this season for the second-most in the A-10.
St. Bonaventure (2-6) has dropped two straight and four of five. The Bonnies are coming off a 17-10 loss at Vermont on March 23. They are led by redshirt senior LeighAnn Stauffer, who paces the team in goals (16), assists (8) and points (24) this season. The Patriots are 4-0 all-time against St. Bonaventure.
Last year, Mason enjoyed its most successful A-10 season since joining the league in 2014. The Patriots tied for second with a 7-2 mark in league play for their most conference wins in program history. Mason earned the No. 2 seed – its best seed since joining the conference – in making the A-10 Tournament for the second straight year. The Patriots were tabbed to finish fourth in the A-10 preseason coaches poll.
