Patriots sweep Thursday action, go 4-0 at PTR Springfest

HILTON HEAD, S.C. – The George Mason University women's tennis team (8-4) completed an unblemished run through the field at the PTR Springfest Thursday with a pair of victories over Slippery Rock and Savannah State.
 
Mason went 4-0 on its spring break excursion to Hilton Head, capped off by the two wins on Thursday.
 
"Even with the cold temperatures today, our team showed great resilience and fight," head coach Steven Curtis said. "We played some solid teams and competed well throughout the lineup."
 
Mason 8, Slippery Rock 1
 
Mason kicked off the day with a dominant 8-1 victory over Slippery Rock.
 
The Patriots swept the doubles matches to take a quick 3-0 lead in the match. Scarlett Walson and Olivia Lacy-Thompson won their fourth-straight doubles dual match, 8-6, to begin the day at the No. 2 position. Sydney Green and Rachel Lee then won at No. 1 doubles, 9-7, and the solid Morgan Yang/Nicole Haigwood rounded out the doubles circuit with their fourth-straight victory (8-6).
 
In singles action, Green (6-0, 7-5), Walston (6-2, 6-3), Lacy-Thompson (6-2, 6-3) and Lowe (6-4, 6-3) won their matches in straight sets at the No. 1, No. 3, No. 4, and No. 6 positions, respectively.
 
Yang also won a grueling, pressure-packed match at No. 2 singles. She dropped the first set, 4-6, before rallying with a 7-6 tiebreak win in the second frame. In the third, Yang battled with Slippery Rock's Carla Corrochano for a crazy 30-game marathon before ultimately coming out on top, 16-14.
 
Mason 7, Savannah State 0
 
In the afternoon session, the Patriots cruised to a 7-0 sweep of Savannah State.
 
Walston and Lacy-Thompson extended their win streak to five at doubles with a 6-0 win over SSU's El Kateb and Burrows. Mason won all three doubles points in the match.
 
At singles, Sydney Green went the distance at No. 1 singles to post her third consecutive victory. Green won her first set 6-1, then after dropping the second 4-6, came back to earn a 10-5 victory in the third.
 
Yang's singles win streak reached six with a 6-3, 6-4 victory at the No. 2 position.
 
Walston also won 6-3, 6-4 at No. 3 singles, and Rachel Lee easily dispatched of SSU's Bria Burrows at No. 4 (6-0, 6-2).

Nicole Haigwood won at No. 5 singles as well (6-2, 6-2).
 
Mason returns to the Mid-Atlantic this weekend and will take on Davidson College Sunday at 11 a.m. in the Tarheel State.
