FAIRFAX, Va. – George Mason University men's basketball incoming freshman Goanar Mar has been selected to participate on the United States All-America Team at the 44
th Annual Hoop Culture Capital Classic, scheduled for April 8 at the Verizon Center.
The honor is an exceptional one for Mar, who joins a loaded roster that includes teammates committed to North Carolina, Arizona, Syracuse, Villanova and Maryland, among others.
The Capital Classic returns to the Verizon Center for the first time since 2003, when the sellout contest featured LeBron James and Chris Paul.
Established in 1974, the Capital Classic has been a beacon in the Washington, DC community, showcasing some of the nation's top high school basketball talent.
The game has become a steppingstone for many college All-Americans, NBA All-Stars and Pro Basketball Hall of Famers, including Moses Malone, Magic Johnson, Ralph Sampson, Dominique Wilkins, Michael Jordan, Patrick Ewing, Gran Hill, Jason Kidd, Carmelo Anthony, LeBron James, Chris Paul, Dwight Howard and Klay Thompson.
The annual affair pits a group of U.S. All-Americans against a star-studded group of student-athletes from the D.C./Maryland/Virginia area.
Tickets for the two-game session are $25, with all proceeds benefiting the Washington D.C. Boys & Girls Club.
The 11 a.m. contest will feature the District All-Stars and the Suburban All-Stars. Mar will play in the 1 p.m. main event.
Mar is a 6-foot-7 inch forward from Minneapolis. Ranked as a three-star recruit by ESPN.com, Rivals.com and Scout.com, Mar chose Mason over offers from Iowa State, Butler, Purdue, Cincinnati, Xavier and DePaul, among others.
Mar led De La Salle High School to the program's fifth straight 1AAA state title on March 12. He was one of five finalists for the state of Minnesota's prestigious Mr. Basketball Award.
He is joined in Mason's incoming freshman class by Javon Greene, a 6-foot-1-inch guard out of McDonough, Ga.
