HILTON HEAD, S.C. – The George Mason University women's tennis team continued its winning ways on spring break with a 5-2 victory over Augustana (S.D.) on Wednesday.
The Patriots took the doubles point over the No. 32 ranked Vikings, then won three of the first five singles matches to earn the team's second victory in a row at the PTR Springfest.
"Augustana is a very tough, nationally ranked DII team," head coach Steven Curtis said. "This was good win for our team. I was very proud of the improvement we have made both collectively and individually."
The Patriots fell in the first doubles position, but won at the No. 2 and No. 3 spots to clinch the point.
Scarlett Walston and
Olivia Lacy-Thompson easily dispatched of their foes at No. 2, 8-2.
Morgan Yang and
Nicole Haigwood also won 8-2 at the No. 3 spot. Yang and Haigwood are now 5-2 together in dual doubles action in 2017.
Walston finished first in singles, winning her match, 6-2, 6-2, at No. 3 to build a 2-0 lead for the Green & Gold.
Augie rallied to take the No. 4 match and move within one (2-1), but
Morgan Yang took down Taylor Jackson at No. 2 (6-4, 6-3) to put the Patriots back up by two points at 3-1.
The Vikings again responded with a win at No. 1 singles to get within one (3-2), but
Liz Lowe came through for the Patriots at No. 6, winning in three sets (6-1, 1-6, 10-7) to clinch the match.
Mason earned its fifth point after
Olivia Lacy-Thompson captured her match at No. 5 (6-4, 1-6, 10-7).
The Patriots wrap up PTR Springfest with two matches Thursday. Mason opens with Slippery Rock at 8 a.m., then battles Savannah State at 4 p.m.
