FAIRFAX, Va. – With a day delay and with only half the games that were originally scheduled, the annual Cherry Blossom Classic hosted by George Mason University's softball team will take place nevertheless on Sunday.

Cornell and Akron will join Mason in the round-robin tournament in which the teams were initially supposed to play each other twice, but cold weather canceled Saturday's portion of the schedule.

The tournament will complete Mason's now-nine game home stand, which the Patriots will try to seal on a positive note after having won only one of the previous seven games. Next time they play at home will be in the last weekend of March, when they will welcome La Salle for a series that will open Mason's Atlantic 10 Conference schedule.

Last time out, Mason challenged NC State but dropped Tuesday's mid-week opener to the Wolfpack, 4-0.

SCOUTING THE OPPONENTS

The Patriots' first Cherry Blossom Classic opponent, Ivy League member Cornell, has played only five games this season, seven fewer than Mason and 13 fewer than Akron. All those games were a part of the Hatter Classic in DeLand, Fla last weekend. Cornell's only win came with a convincing 9-2 scoreline against Bethune-Cookman. However, Cornell comes into Sunday's action off of consecutive losses that came in five- and six-inning games, respectively. The second one of those was namely to B-CU, 13-5.

Akron has also lost four of the last five games before Sunday, doing so across two tournaments. The Zips completed the Bobbie Bailey Tournament last weekend with a 1-3 record, but will still have some momentum going into the match against the Big Red after beating their Ivy League rival Dartmouth 4-0 for their only win. However, three of Akron's recent losses have come by a margin of four runs or larger.

UPDATED CHERRY BLOSSOM CLASSIC SCHEDULE:

Sunday, March 12:
Akron vs. Cornell – 10 a.m.
Mason vs. Cornell – 12:30 p.m.
Mason vs. Akron – 3 p.m.
