FAIRFAX, Va. – After taking a nationally ranked foe to overtime, the George Mason women's lacrosse looks to bounce back and build some momentum in wrapping up its first homestand of the year.
The Patriots host Liberty at 1 p.m. on Saturday at George Mason Stadium. Mason (1-2) will close out a two-game homestand, which began Wednesday with an 11-10 overtime loss to No. 20 Virginia Tech in the home opener.
Liberty (1-5) has lost four straight and is coming off an 11-8 loss to Old Dominion last Saturday. The Flames are led by Brianna McCaffrey and Hannah Quast, who have each scored a team-high seven goals this season. Kayla Foster leads the team with eight assists in addition to six goals.
Mason owns a 4-1 advantage in the all-time series against Liberty. The Patriots defeated the Flames 17-7 last year in Lynchburg, Va.
The Patriots are also looking to snap out of a losing streak as they've lost their last two – to Georgetown last Saturday and against Virginia Tech.
On Wednesday against the Hokies,
Alexa McGovern's goal on an assist from
Lindsey Tangeman with 54 seconds left in regulation forced overtime. But Virginia Tech scored 46 seconds into overtime on a free position shot to escape with the victory.
Mason led by as many as four goals in the first half and held a three-goal lead at halftime. The Hokies, however, soared back with five straight goals to take a two-goal lead. Mason didn't quit, though, as
Chachi Kelehan scored with 3:08 minutes left and
Jordan Sdanowich won the ensuing draw control to set up McGovern's goal. Kelehan scored her first four goals of the season and
Melissa Lobaccaro added two.
After Saturday, the Patriots hit the road for three straight games, starting at High Point (N.C.) on Wednesday, March 15.
