FAIRFAX, Va. - The George Mason University men's basketball team (15-8, 5-5) will head south Wednesday for a matchup with Davidson College (12-9, 5-5).
Tip-off between the Patriots and Wildcats is scheduled for 7 p.m. inside Belk Arena. Wednesday's game will be televised on the American Sports Network. The A-10 will stream the TV feed directly through the A-10 Network as well. In addition, Bill Rohland will call the game on the A-10 Digital Network, with pre-game coverage beginning at 6:45 p.m.
Mason is 8-3 combined in road and neutral site contests this season and 7-5 in games played inside EagleBank Arena.
Mason has already eclipsed its win total from the entire 2015-16 season (11). The team also has matched last season's A-10 win total (5) with eight league games remaining.
The Patriots are 6-2 on the road this season and won six of their first seven road games for the first time in program history. The six road wins are the most by a Patriots team since 2012-13 (2-11 in 2015-16).
Last time out, the Patriots rode a hot shooting night to grab a 95-75 win over La Salle on Saturday in Fairfax.
Mason shot a season-best 63.3 percent (31-49) vs. the Explorers, marking the team's best FG% since a Dec. 2014 game vs. Catawba (42-63, .667).
Mason also made 10-of-18 3-pointers (.556) and now leads the A-10 in 3-point percentage in league games (.406, 65-160). The Patriots shot 28.5 percent in league play in 2015-16.
Senior
Marquise Moore led the Patriots with career highs in points (28) and 3pt FGs made (3) in the win. He also grabbed nine rebounds and dished out five assists.
Sophomore
Jaire Grayer added a season-best 22 points (8-11 FG, 4-6 3pt FG) and grabbed seven rebounds in 37 minutes.
Otis Livingston II couldn't miss - literally - against La Salle (5-5 FG, 3-3 3pt FG, 6-6 FT) and finished with 19 points. He was named Atlantic 10 Co-Player of the Week after averaging 24 ppg and shooting 75 percent (15-20) in two games last week (8-10 3pt FG).
The 6-foot-2-inch Moore is the top rebounding guard in the nation (10.4 rpg), is third in the country among all players in defensive rebounds/game (8.6), 15th in overall rebounding and is one of only 19 players nationally with 13+ double-doubles.
Grayer has scored 10+ points in eight of 10 A-10 games this season. In conf. games, he is third in the A-10 in 3-point percentage (.490) and third in 3pt FG made/game (2.5). He also is t-9th in rebounding (6.7).
Moore/Grayer/Livingston/Jenkins combined for 85 of Mason's 95 points vs. La Salle and teamed up to shoot 74.4 percent (29-39).
SEESAW SEASON
The Patriots have alternated losses with wins for the entirety of the Atlantic 10 slate. Mason is 7-1 in games following a loss this season, but since Dec. 30, the Patriots are 0-5 in games following a win. The Green & Gold will look to buck that trend Wednesday vs. Davidson.
HISTORY vs. DAVIDSON
Wednesday's game marks the fifth all-time meeting between George Mason and Davidson in men's basketball. The Wildcats are 2-0 in games played in North Carolina. In last season's series, the Patriots won a thriller in Fairfax, 60-59, on Feb. 13, and fell at Davidson, 81-75, on Jan. 9.
Jalen Jenkins averaged 18.5 points, 8.5 rebounds and shot 70.8 percent (17-24) in two games vs. the Wildcats in 2015-16, while
Marquise Moore (15.0 ppg, 8.0 rpg) and
Jaire Grayer (10.5 ppg, 55.5 3pt FG%) also played well in the two games last year.
A LOOK AT THE WILDCATS (12-9, 5-5 A-10)
Davidson was picked fourth out of 14 teams in the 2016-17 Atlantic 10 preseason poll. The Wildcats posted a 7-4 non-conference record which included wins over Missouri and Arizona State. The team is 5-5 in league play thus far, including a home win over VCU. The Wildcats feature one of the top scoring duos in the nation. Senior Jack Gibbs is second in the A-10 in scoring (21.4 ppg), third in 3-pointers made/game (3.0) and sixth in assists/contest (4.4). Junior Peyton Aldridge is third in the A-10 in scoring (21.0 ppg), third in 3-point percentage (.431) and seventh in rebounding (7.6 rpg).
