PITTSBURGH – Coming out of an eight-day break, the George Mason women's basketball team looks to begin the month of February on a winning note.
The Patriots wrap up a two-game road swing at Duquesne on 3 p.m. on Sunday at the A.J. Palumbo Center. The game will be televised nationally on the American Sports Network, with the matchup being aired locally in the D.C. area on CSN Mid-Atlantic.
Mason (11-12, 4-6 Atlantic 10) last played more than a week ago on Jan. 28, falling 59-57 at La Salle. The Patriots erased a 12-point, fourth-quarter deficit and twice tied the game in the final minutes. But La Salle's Amy Griffin sunk a game-winning turnaround jumper with .7 seconds left. Mason freshman
Alexsis Grate nearly won the game with a 55-court heave at the buzzer but the shot rolled off the rim for its second straight loss.
Senior
Kara Wright scored a game-high 25 points – all in the second half – to tie her most in two years at Mason. The Louisville, Ky., native has registered five games of 20 or more points and recorded her first five career double-doubles this season. She leads the team in points (15.6), rebounds (6.3), assists (2.9) and steals (1.4). In A-10 games, she is averaging 17.9 points – second-highest in the league– and 7.4 rebounds.
Duquesne (12-12, 5-6 A-10) has won three of five but comes off a 60-58 loss at Saint Joseph's on Wednesday. Sophomore guard Chassidy Omoogrosso leads Duquesne with 13.5 points a game. Sixfoot-3 senior forward Amadea Szamosi averages 13.1 points and 8.4 rebounds and sophomore Julijana Vojinovic averages 10.2 points.
The Dukes, led by fourth-year coach Dan Burt, won a share of the A-10 regular-season championship and reached the second round of the NCAA Tournament before falling to eventual national champ Connecticut. Duquesne has won the last three meetings against Mason and leads the all-time series 4-2.
