SPRINGFIELD, Va. –
The George Mason University women's tennis team ended its winter session of the 2016-17 season in strong fashion, winning 7-0 over Mt. St. Mary's on Sunday at Springfield Country Club.
The Patriots won two out of three doubles matches to take the doubles point, then put forth an efficient sweep of their six singles matches to claim the victory.
"We played a tough Mountaineer team today, but we fought hard and showed some focus and determination," head coach Stephen Curtis
said. "I was proud of how we battled."
Mason's two doubles wins came at the first and third positions. Sydney Green
and Rachel Lee
won their match handily, 6-3, over the Mountaineers tandem of Alexa Quintanilla and Sruthi Kamprath.
At the third spot, Morgan Yang
and Nicole Haigwood
defeated the Mount's Emma Blake and Hannah Davis, 6-4. With the victory, the duo improved to 4-2 in dual doubles action this season.
With the doubles point locked down, Scarlett Walston
wrapped up her singles match at the No. 3 position first. She won in straight sets, 6-1, 6-4.
then won her match at No. 1 singles, 5-7, 6-0, 10-6, to give the Patriots a 3-0 advantage.
At No. 2 singles, Morgan Yang
split her first two sets with Sruthi Kamprath before taking the third in extra frames, 13-11.
From there, the Patriots took care of their final three matches. At No. 4 singles, Rachel Lee
won in straight sets (6-3, 7-6), then Olivia Lacy-Thompson
took her No. 5 matchup in three (3-6, 6-3, 10-7).
To wrap up the day, Liz Lowe
defeated Emma Blake at No. 6 singles, 6-4, 6-2. Lowe is 2-1 at the No. 6 singles spot this dual season.
Mason now takes a competitive break, before returning to action March 13-16. The Patriots will head to Florida for the PTR Springfest, where Mason will battle Edinboro, Augustana (S.D.), Slippery Rock and Savannah State.
