STERLING, Va. – The George Mason University women's tennis team fell to Towson University by a score of 5-0 on Saturday at the Trump National Golf Club.
Playing in a 4+1 format, the Patriots fought hard against a good Towson program and gained some valuable experience early in the dual season.
"We showed improvement today," head coach
Stephen Curtis said. "I can tell our hard work is paying off as our intensity increases. Towson is a very strong, well-coached team. The 0-5 score doesn't really tell the whole story, but the individual results do."
Mason's doubles tandem of senior
Morgan Yang and sophomore
Nicole Haigwood went the distance against Gomer and Van Oorschodt of Towson. The Patriots fell in a competitive first set, 6-4, then rallied back to take the second frame, 6-2. But the Tigers prevailed in the third, 6-1.
At No. 2 singles, senior
Scarlett Walston also went the distance against her opponent, Lucy Williams. Walston dropped the opening frame, 6-3, then rallied back to take the second in commanding fashion (6-1). Williams captured the third set, 6-3.
Mason returns to action next Sunday (Feb. 26) at 4:45 p.m. vs. Mt. St. Mary's at Springfield Country Club.
